The Importance of Knowledge on Hair Health in Every Service We Provide.

Updated: Apr 9

By: Cori E

As black professional hairstylists, we wield a profound influence on our clients’ confidence and self-esteem. Each service we provide is not merely about aesthetics but also about promoting and preserving the health of our clients’ hair. Understanding the intricate layers of the hair strand is fundamental to our craft, empowering us to deliver exceptional results while safeguarding the vitality of our clients’ hair. Whether we are braiding, twisting, locking, colouring, or styling, we all should have this knowledge.

At the core of our expertise lies a comprehensive understanding of the three distinct layers of the hair strand: the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. These layers, though imperceptible to the naked eye, play a pivotal role in determining the overall health and appearance of hair.

The cuticle, akin to the protective outer layer of a fortress, serves as the first line of defense against external aggressors such as heat, chemicals, and environmental pollutants. By maintaining the integrity of the cuticle through gentle handling and appropriate product selection, we can prevent damage and promote shine and smoothness of our clients’ hair.

Beneath the cuticle lies the cortex, the heart of the hair strand, where the majority of its strength, elasticity, and pigment reside. Understanding the unique characteristics of the cortex enables us to tailor our services to meet the individual needs of each client, whether it be fortifying weak strands, enhancing curl patterns, or addressing color concerns.

Lastly, while the medulla may be less pronounced in finer hair textures, its presence in thicker strands contributes to overall hair density and resilience. By recognizing the role of the medulla in hair structure, we can better cater to the diverse needs of our clientele, offering personalized solutions that prioritize both style and hair health.

As black professional hairstylists, we have a responsibility to advocate for the holistic well-being of our clients’ hair. By deepening our knowledge of hair health and embracing a client-centered approach, we can elevate our craft and foster enduring relationships built both on trust and expertise.

Incorporating this knowledge into every service we provide is not merely a professional obligation but a testament to our commitment to excellence and integrity. Let us continue to empower ourselves and our clients through education, innovation, and a steadfast dedication to promoting the beauty and health of black hair.
